Ignite a tradition of generosity on Tuesday

Shoppers can help women鈥檚 centre clients through #GivingTuesday

Giving Tuesday occurs on Dec. 2, jars will be at cash registers throughout Squamish.

The Howe Sound Women鈥檚 Centre Society is asking 麻豆社国产shoppers to drop a few coins into聽 #GivingTuesday donation jars this Tuesday (Dec. 2).

Coming right after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which traditionally mark the start of intense holiday shopping, #GivingTuesday is meant to celebrate philanthropy.

聽鈥#GivingTuesday is part of a global social movement that reflects a shift in the spirit of the holiday season, from one of consumerism to one of celebration, giving, and gratitude,鈥 Sheila Allen, executive director of Howe Sound Women鈥檚 Centre Society, said in a media release.

鈥淲e hope that we can help ignite a new tradition of generosity right here in the Sea to Sky Corridor by encouraging people to take a stand against gender violence, advocate for gender equality, and provide support to survivors of abuse by donating to our society on Dec. 2.鈥

Donation jars will be available at participating merchants throughout Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton.

The initiative was started by the UN Foundation in 2012 to celebrate altruism.

More than 1,900 organizations across Canada will be participating in #GivingTuesday this year, according to the release.

For those wishing to donate online rather than at the cash register, #GivingTuesday, payments can be made in support of the Howe Sound Women鈥檚 Centre at聽 or in person at either of the Centre locations: 38021 Third Ave. in 麻豆社国产or 1519 Spring Creek Dr. in Whistler.

The Howe Sound Women鈥檚 Centre has operated in the Sea to Sky Community for 33 years.聽The Centre helps women, children and youth who need emergency shelter and support.
