The 麻豆社国产Wizards weaved a little magic last weekend in Gibsons compiling a perfect 5-0 record en route to the championship at the third annual Coho Kings men's fastball tournament.
麻豆社国产edged the Surrey Rebels 2-1 in Sunday's final backed by a complete game from pitcher Jason Wright who struck out nine in the victory.
The Rebels took an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the second only to see the Wizards tie it up in the bottom of the third and took the lead for good in the sixth with a double and sac fly.
麻豆社国产got themselves out of a pair of jams in the fifth and sixth innings that proved to be the game changer.
In the fifth, the Rebels had runners at second and third with two out, but Wright came up with a key strikeout to end the inning. In the sixth, Surrey again had runners at second and third, but a Wright strikeout followed by a lazy pop-up to Barrie Woodard at third, kept the game tied at 1-1.
In the semifinal, 麻豆社国产edged the host Coho Kings 4-1 behind a strong pitching effort by Travis Moyle.
Moyle locked up with Kings' Jim "Weepy" Peers in a battle of former Greg Gardner teammates. The game was deadlocked at 0-0 heading to the bottom of the third, when Moyle hit a groundout platting Calem Gardner who reached on a two-base error and was then sacrificed to third.
The big blow came in the bottom of the fourth when Woodard sent a towering two-run blast to left field platting Jeremy Galley who singled to start the inning for a 3-0 Wizards lead.
Moyle then drove in Gardner for the fourth 麻豆社国产run in the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, Gibsons mounted a bit a comeback thanks to a Peers double and an RBI single from Tim Scarr. Andrew Baron reached on an error, putting runners at first and third, but Kevin Penonzek struck out to end the game and the threat.
Gibsons finished third in the tournament with Wheatsheaf from Nanaimo in fourth.
The Rebels made it to the final after a 3-1 win over Wheatsheaf in the second semifinal.
Gibsons started Sunday with a 4-2 quarterfinal win over the Burnaby Dukes backed by a strong pitching effort from Mike Sopow.
In the other quarterfinal games, the Rebels defeated the 麻豆社国产Juniors while Wheatsheaf beat Sechelt's Custom Carpet.
The Wizards received a bye into the semifinals after finishing 3-0 in Saturday's round robin. The Rebels finished second followed by Wheatsheaf, Dukes, Coho Kings, Custom Carpet and the 麻豆社国产Juniors.
The teams were then seeded one through seven for the playoffs.
