'El Mal' from 'Emilia P茅rez' wins Oscar for best original song. 'The Brutalist' wins original score

French composer duo Cl茅ment Ducol and Camille took home the original song award at the Oscars on Sunday for their track, 鈥淓l Mal.鈥 In January, 鈥淓l Mal鈥 earned the pair a Golden Globe in the same category.

French composer duo Cl茅ment Ducol and Camille took home the original song award at for their track, 鈥淓l Mal.鈥

In January, 鈥淓l Mal鈥 earned the pair in the same category.

The musical is a lot of things 鈥 a musical, a transgender parable, and frequently criticized for its

鈥淲e are so grateful,鈥 Camille said in her acceptance speech. 鈥淲e wrote 鈥楨l Mal鈥 as a song to denounce corruption, and we hope it speaks to the role music and art can play and continue to play as a force of good and progress in the world.鈥

The award was presented by Mick Jagger. 鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 the first choice,鈥 he joked. 鈥淭he producers really wanted Bob Dylan to do it.鈥

Ducol and Camille beat Diane Warren for 鈥淭he Journey鈥 from 鈥淭he Six Triple Eight,鈥 Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Brandi Carlile and Andrew Watt for 鈥淣ever Too Late鈥 from 鈥淓lton John: Never Too Late,鈥 and Abraham Alexander, Brandon Marcel and Black Pumas鈥 Adrian Quesada for 鈥淟ike A Bird鈥 from 鈥淪ing Sing.鈥

They also beat themselves: Their composition 鈥淢i Camino鈥 from 鈥淓milia P茅rez鈥 was also up for the award.

The first-time Oscar nominees had a total of three nominations, including original score, at .

鈥淵ou go from anxiety to relief, and you鈥檙e filled up with energy and you need that,鈥 Camille in January, when nominations were announced. 鈥淲e鈥檝e worked so much, and we鈥檝e worked so much for the campaign ... I feel very fulfilled and very happy for all the team.鈥

Camille said 鈥渞epresents something very important.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 a very free, provocative and empathic, compassionate movie. And I really think this is what we need now.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 totally incredible. I was like, 鈥榃hat?鈥 It鈥檚 three nominations. It鈥檚 huge,鈥 added Ducol. 鈥淲e were involved at the beginning of the construction of the story in music ... So everything is linked together, is woven together between the script, the screenplay, the songs. And so, we feel like it鈥檚 our story, our movie ... It鈥檚 not just a musical or reflecting a story or reflecting action in the movie. The music and the songs, in this movie, is the script. It is the story.鈥

In another music category, first-time Academy Award nominee Daniel Blumberg is He took home the trophy for original score for 鈥淭he Brutalist鈥 on Sunday.

Blumberg beat Ducol and Camille (鈥淓milia P茅rez鈥), Kris Bowers (鈥淭he Wild Robot鈥), Volker Bertelmann (鈥淐onclave鈥) and John Powell and Stephen Schwartz (鈥淲icked鈥).

鈥淚've been an artist for 20 years now,鈥 Blumberg said in his acceptance speech. "And when I met (director) Brady (Corbet) I met my artistic soulmate.鈥

follows L谩zl贸 T贸th, a fictional visionary Hungarian architect who escaped the Holocaust, sailed to the United States to find his American Dream and created the style of architecture the film takes its name from.

When the nominations were announced in January, Blumberg that he was actually with Corbet when he learned of his first-ever nod. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been quite a surreal day,鈥 he said. The pair shared a hug when the news arrived.

鈥溾楾he Brutalist鈥 was always such an important project for me,鈥 Blumberg continued, describing the team behind it as dedicated to making 鈥渟omething with urgency, to make something with no compromise.鈥
